The 3-Bid Myth: Why It May Be Costing You More Than You Think
We wanted to write about something that might make you pause for thought, and may even be a bit controversial. Many homeowners and project managers follow the old rule: "Get three bids before hiring a contractor." While this sounds like smart budgeting, it can actually lead to poor decisions and missed opportunities.
Here’s why the 3-bid method doesn’t always work:
1. Lowest Bid Does Not Equal Best Value
A low bid might look appealing, but it can signal red flags, for example, cutting corners, missing scope items, or lack of experience. Contractors who are under pressure to “win” the job often reduce quality or exclude important details to stay competitive. That low number can quickly balloon with changes, delays, or rework.
2. Bids Aren’t Apples to Apples
Unless your project has detailed plans and specs, each contractor is likely interpreting the scope differently. One may include cleanup or permits, and another might not. Comparing numbers without understanding what’s included (or left out) leads to confusion, not clarity. Make a detailed list of questions you should be asking your contractor. Your contractor should be asking you a load of questions as well.
3. You’re Hiring a Partner, Not Just a Service
Construction projects are complex. You need someone you trust who communicates well, stays on schedule, and delivers a quality product they stand behind. The right contractor will help you avoid problems before they start. They will listen to your concerns, explain things in a way that help you to understand the process and offer suggestions based on expertise.
A Better Approach
Rather than chasing three bids, focus on Finding the Right Fit. Interview contractors, ask detailed questions, and evaluate their communication and professionalism. Look for clarity in their proposal, proven experience, and alignment with your goals. Technology is literally at your fingertips! Check out online reviews, follow their socials and get a feel for who they are. Does their website have a portfolio of their work? Can they provide references? Educate yourself on who you would trust and feel most comfortable working with.
In construction, as in most things, You Get What You Pay For. Don’t let the 3-bid myth lead you to the wrong contractor or the wrong outcome.
